Carved Luni-Carrara marble

MNAT 12248

Probably a posthumous portrait of an unknown lady, found in the residential zone of Tarraco.

Of particular interest is the elaborate hairstyle, similar to that seen on the effigies of Faustina the Elder, wife of Antoninus Pius. This dependence on the fashion introduced by the empress contrasts with the individuality of the features of the face, which realistically depict a mature woman, no doubt a member of Tarraco high society.
